ATKM 2- Zimmermann

Jack is not very good at understanding people's motivations or feelings, especially when it comes to women. With all of the women he has been with, he was always in the dark about what they want, what they are trying to do, how they feel. When he was with Anne, he only told her things that he guessed she would want to hear, like being a lawyer, which took him down a path that he was stuck with for a part of his life. "I had to give the impression of being far-sighted and purposeful and competent. I had played like hell giving that impression. She had seen right through me, like a piece of glass, and there wasn't anything to answer except to say that she was very wrong, and that I indeed was going to study law..." (398). Jack had no idea what he was going to do for a living, he planned to find some kind of job eventually, but there wasn't much effort put into his plan. Anne loved Jack, she didn't care what he was going to do as long as they were together, yet he got himself into years of law school until he couldn't take it anymore. With Lois, Jack was always a bit curious as to why she married him in the first place. Lois and Jack often fought about many things, but due to Jack's incompetence for understanding one's motivations, he never knew what she was feeling during these arguments."Originally I had interpreted these gifts as springing from a misguided and love-inspired attempt to give me pleasure...my pleasure was the last consideration involved" (426). Jack always seemed to be quite lost with women, even his mom. Never knowing why they acted in certain ways or said certain things. He is either compliant or controverted with women and it doesn't seems to affect the way he views women.
