Wildvine - character rankings post 3

(From best to worst)
Men:
Hugh Miller: Although he is a minor character in the book, is one of the only characters that didn't have apparent big flaws are bad deeds.  He quits his job of working with Willie because he does not follow Willies morals.  Quitting a job because you don't think something is right shows very strong morals, therefore I think Hugh deserves to be at the top of the list.
Gilbert Mastern: Gilbert, the brother of Cass Mastern, is a pretty neutral character. He does not commit any crimes nor any good deeds, whereas almost all of the characters committed some sort of bad action, so even thought Gilbert isn't necessarily "good", he is better than most characters.
Scholarly Attorney: He took in Jack as his son and treated him with care, although he did run out on him and his mother, however for good reasons. He didn't seam to have a huge negative impact on Jack. Jack has loving, yet confusing memories of the Scholarly Attorney, such as feeding him chocolate when he was little, which indicates the reader that the Scholarly Attorney was a loving man who was generous to care for a boy that was not his. However, why I put him lower on the list is because he lied to Jack for a long time, and left him when he was young.
Judge Irwin:  He is always referred to as an honest man, and the fact that it took months of research for Jack to dig up dirt on him shows that he hasn't been dishonest or corrupt for a long time. However, he did hide his past from Jack and lied about being his father, never telling Jack.
George:  Poor guy...he's not good nor bad, just a strange character, probably with a mental disability
Cass Mastern: Cass's main flaw is that he had an affair with his best friends wife, however he then dedicates his life to try to redeem himself, trying to find Phebe and joining the army.
Adam Stanton:  He is overall a trustworthy, likable character.  He does not want to have any part in corruption and he dedicated his career to saving peoples lives. I would put him on the top of the list, however he did kill Willie. Although he had many very good reasons to kill him and I was personally really glad that Willie was killed, murder is still a terrible crime, no matter the reasons.
Jack Burden: What a fellow. He is not purposely causing harm, however he does cause a ton of chaos and hurts several people by being careless. He blackmails his father, although he didn't know it was his father at the time, leading him to suicide. He's Willies assistant in corruption, which causes many problems to characters. He also does not take responsibility for his actions and avoids accepting any consequences because of his ignorant view on life. Yet, although he is careless, annoying, treats women terribly, and irresponsible, I do not think he is necessarily a bad person at heart.
Tom Talos: He is a reckless teenage football star that causes all kind of trouble. He gets a girl pregnant and he accidentally kills a girl while driving drunk. But I do not think his morals are terrible, and being raised by Willie I can understand why he is so careless, but that does not completely excuse him from his actions.
Governor Stanton:  He protected his friend Judge Irwin from trouble, which as a friend is an admirable thing to do, however he protected him for something bad that he should have gotten in trouble for.
Tiny Duffy: He was a pretty slimy, corrupt character. He was put in a position of power as Lieutenant Governor, and he pushed Adam Stanton into killing Willie by telling him about Anne and Willies affair.
Sugar Boy: He shows his villainous side at the ending of the book when he shoots Adam Stanton.
Willie: Wow, there is just too much to say about how much I hate him. He is crazed with greed and will do anything for power. He is tangled in corruption, lies, carelessness, cheating, affairs with many women, and will do anything, no matter who it hurts, his son, his wife, his friends, to obtain more power.

Women:
Phebe: She is completely innocent, and stuck in the terrible role as a slave.
Lucy: She is always taking care of Tom and tries to help Willie several times, but gets tired of Willies cheating and morals and so she leaves him because she does not agree with his actions and morals. She helped Willie so much and put up with Willie and all of his flaws and actions, struggling to stay with him for the generosity of not making Willie look bad in his campaign.  She is also the only one that expresses any fear about Toms baby, and adapts the child.
Lois: She was Jacks first wife, and although she didn't do anything bad, she also didn't do anything good enough to deserve to be  moved to the top of the ranking. Her and Jack separated because of their lack of emotion and because Jack still had feelings for Anne, nothing that Lois did wrong.
Jack's mom: Although she had an affair while married and had several different partners, she doesn't commit any terrible crimes. She claims to have always loved Judge Irwin, which kind of makes her affair acceptable, sort of...
Anne: She has an irresponsible affair with Willie, although she claims to love him, this shows that her morals are not entirely pure.  Also, after leaving Jack for Willie (in a way), she still asks Jack to do her many favors. She is weak, and seams to not be able to do many things on her own.
Sadie:  She is always jealous of Willies other lovers and takes revenge by telling Tiny Duffy about Anne and Willie, knowing this might cause the death of Willie. This is a terrible act of revenge due to irrational jealousy that isn't acceptable, putting her towards the bottom of the ranking.
Annabelle Trice: The only thing we know about her is that she cheated on her husband with his best friend, and then sold her slave simply because she couldn't stand to know that her slave Phebe knew about her terrible deed. Because of this, she is seen as a terrible person, putting her at the end of the ranking.

Side note: All of these characters were complex, yet most were very dis-likable.  Although there were several layers to most of the characters, I still found it difficult to decide who to put at the top because they were almost all despicable.

  1. My hierarchy of men and women is very similar to yours. I totally agree with Hugh Miller being the absolute best male character in this book. Like you said, he wasn't a very big character, but he was always described as having the best heart. He was smart about getting away from Willie when he did. He knew his morals and he stuck to them. He was one of the only men who didn't create or get involved with any problems. Although I put Tiny Duffy at the bottom of my list, I also agree with the fact that Willie is one of the worst. I couldn't stand the fact that all of these people liked Willie and wanted to be around him and work for him... I hated him! The way he used power for manipulation. The way he was never loyal to any woman. The way he abused his team. I can't think of one thing he did that makes him a good person. Besides, one good thing wouldn't make up for all of the trouble he created.
For my list of women, I also started Phebe and ended with Annabelle Trice. Phebe of course is the best because she did absolutely nothing that would mean otherwise. She was an innocent slave that had to put of with Annabelle. Annabelle, on the other hand, has most definitely done things to give her a bad reputation. Starting with the fact that she cheated on her husband with his best friend, which caused him to kill himself. And then she sold Phebe into prostitution... completely aware that Phebe had a husband. The women weren't as good or bad to the same extent of the men in this novel, the men seemed to have much worse flaws. Despite the fact that many of these characters were good people with good morals, almost everyone had a major fault.
