West is the way people go to figure things out through out History. For decades in Europe the west was where the power and fortune was, in the U.S. many people began to head west in ints early history motivated by a variety of things. Gold, land, and for Jack he goes west to clear his head. As a history major it only seems natural for him to follow the trends o history, its what he seems to know best. He wanted to put himself in a place of opportunity and pleasure and through out history it has been the west and it seems it will be the west for Jack as well. "That was why I came to lie on a bed in a hotel in Long Beach, California, on the coast amid the grandeurs of nature" (431). He came here to solve his personal problems among the "grandeurs of nature" is where he saw fit to find the answers to his inner problems. In this case it being his emotional struggle with Anne Stanton. "That was the Anne Stanton whom Willie Talos had picked out, who had betrayed me, or rather, had betrayed an idea of mine which had more importance for me than I had ever realized" (430-431). He lvdd this emotional battle with himself over a girl and his place of resolution was west. He decided to follow his interest in history and see if replicating what people in the past did would work for him as well. Heading west seemed to work wonders for many groups of people through out history. So the history student Jack Burden would assume that heading west could do some good for him as well.
