ATKM 3- Zimmermann

Hugh Miller: Hugh is a very well-rounded, simply great guy. He has strong morals, a pure heart, and is considered the most honorable. He went to Harvard, studying law and served in World War I. In the early stages of Willie's career, Hugh was the attorney general. But, as soon as things start heading for corruption during the Byram White scandal, he resigns. A very smart and honest decision.
Sugar Boy: Sugar Boy is a kind, passionate man with a big heart for Willie. He is completely devoted to the Boss and loves being his driver and body guard. Sugar Boy shoots Adam Stanton at the end, which of course doesn't make him a good person, but he does it out of his love and dedication to Willie.
Judge Irwin: Irwin has been a great father figure to Jack. He strives to be an honest man, however when secrets start to pile up, like the fact that he is Jack's real father and that he accepted a bribe many years ago, the Judge struggles with trying to remain sane. Once Judge Irwin is confronted with the information found from his past, the Judge cannot bare what is to come next and commits suicide.
Jack Burden: Jack is a good guy, he just lacks a few key characteristics, like desire, values, not to mention his very low self confidence. He has been loyal to Willie throughout the years and never really causes much trouble. Jack could definitely use a little help with understanding women, but he means well.
George: George is an innocent man. It's not his fault that he is "unfortunate". The terrible incident of his wife dying is what brought on this mental illness. Luckily, he has Ellis Burden to take care of him.
Scholarly Attorney: The Scholarly Attorney left Jack and his mother when Jack was very young because of the affair his mother was having with Judge Irwin, but Ellis Burden did not consider the effect it would have on Jack throughout his entire life. Though, after he left, he worked to help the poor and unfortunate.
Governor Stanton: Governor Stanton was a great role model for Adam and Anne. He taught them the importance of honesty and good morals, he also taught them to oppose Willie. Governor Stanton reveals a not so great side to him when he protects Judge Irwin in the bribe scandal. Many people lose their respect for Governor Stanton because of this.
Cass Mastern: Cass seems like a bad person right off the bat because of his affair with Annabelle, his best friend's wife. However, he quickly learns from his mistakes and tries to make up for his bad behavior by becoming an abolitionist as well as serving in the Civil War.
Gilbert Mastern: Gilbert is a courteous, hardworking man who went from rags to riches, but like any other plantation owner, he accomplishes it with help from slaves. In fact, Gilbert is similar to Willie in the way that he uses corruption to become successful.
Willie: Willie is a powerful man who uses this privilege to manipulate and bribe his way to corruption. Willie wasn't always this way, he used to be an honest person, but the road to power and success changed him. He believes that certain things, blackmailing and other unethical actions, must be done in order to get what he wants.
Tom Talos: Tom is a stuck up rich boy who takes his life for granted. He's an irresponsible troublemaker with a lot of confidence. Tom's careless actions, like driving drunk, create several issues for Willie's career and image. Although Willie is often egging Tom on, the two butt heads frequently.
Tiny Duffy: Tiny Duffy is just another follower and from the very beginning, Willie and Tiny Duffy had a secret and subtle hatred for each other. Tiny Duffy endured the harassment and torture he got from Willie until he releases the dirt on Willie resulting in his death. Tiny Duffy then becomes governor, like he always wanted.

Lucy: Lucy is a modest woman who is undeserving of the way Willie treats her; his many affairs and constant arguments about Tom. Even though Willie doesn't seem to have much respect for her, she sees the good in him and patiently stands by for whenever he decides to be with her.
Phebe: After Duncan Trice commits suicide, Phebe finds the wedding ring he left on his bed. She brings it to Annabelle thinking it is the right thing to do, however Annabelle sells her as a sex slave even though Phebe is married.
Jack's mom: Jack's mother's many relationships with men also had a big effect on his personality and it is why he never really had a great relationship with his mom. Since Jack was born she has only wanted the best for him and has tried to give it to him, but he is very cynical about it. Once Judge Irwin dies, he finally realizes his mother's big heart and ability to love, and gains respect for her.
Anne: Anne is a very humble person; she volunteers at a children's home and works to change Jack's personality and desires. Although Anne opposes Willie's ideals, she follows through in having an affair with him that becomes quite serious, but eventually ends. If Anne had never found out about her father's secret (protecting the Judge), she would have never lost her morals and probably wouldn't have fallen for Willie.
Sadie: Sadie always seems to have a lot of aggression towards people. She craves respect from men and wants to be seen as equal, but also has a thing for powerful men which is why she, too, has an affair with Willie. Sadie goes slightly crazy when she starts releasing information all over the place. Her actions have caused chaos, the assassination of Willie and lots of fighting, so she decides to go to a clinic.
Annabelle Trice: Annabelle simply isn't a decent woman. She cheats on her husband with his best friend, causing her husband to kill himself and then her slave, Phebe, brings her his wedding ring and she can't bare to have Phebe look at her the way she does so she sells her into prostitution, despite the fact that Phebe has a husband of her own.
